The Zettelmeyer company was founded in 1908 by Hubert Zettelmeyer. Zettelmeyer is a century-old German company that produced agricultural tractors in the early days, and later road equipment, loaders, etc. After the 1980s, Zettelmeyer fell into financial difficulties. In 1990, VME Group began to take shares in Zettelmeyer, and by 1994, it was completely controlled by VME.

The VME Group (Volvo-Michigan-Euclid) formed through Volvo’s allying with Clark Equipment Corporation and its subsidiary Euclid Trucks. In 1995, VME became a wholly owned Volvo company and changed its name to Volvo Construction Equipment. Zettelmeyer's loader product line was gradually integrated into Volvo's product line after 1999.
