Back in 1949, the old Norwegian brand Brøyt (BROYT) was founded by brothers Ingebret and Kristian Soyland. The company is perhaps most memorable for its quirky and simple wheeled excavators, such as the X1 and X2 models introduced in the late 1950s, without wheel drive. If they need to travel any distance, they can be piggybacked by trucks.

In 1999 Sandvik acquired Tamrock Brøyt, which was a leading manufacturer of excavators for the mining industry. Sandvik Mining and Construction ceased production of Brøyt excavators in 2008. Brøyt is now a trademark owned by Sandvik Mining and Construction.
