Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) was established on January 11, 1950. Shin Caterpillar Mitsubishi Ltd. (SCM) is a Japanese joint venture jointly owned by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Caterpillar, mainly engaged in the manufacture and sale of construction machinery such as hydraulic excavators, wheel loaders, and crawler tractors.

SCM was originally established in November 1963 as Caterpillar Mitsubishi Ltd. In 1987, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' hydraulic excavator business was transferred to the joint venture. In 2001, SCM further took over most of the construction machinery business of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, including small construction machinery, crawler transport vehicles and articulated dump trucks.

After the equity ratio was changed, the joint venture was renamed Caterpillar Japan Co., Ltd. (CJL). Caterpillar took full ownership of CJL on March 1, 2012. As a result, the joint venture between Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Caterpillar established in 1963 will be dissolved and CJL will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Caterpillar.
